  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
  • Flowering period: June and July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A great architectural plant with upright stems that are perfect for adding vertical interest. The lacy, olive green leaves are flushed with shades of ruby, and these provide the perfect backdrop for the airy clusters of dark red flowers - and the ruby red seed heads that will follow in late summer. Plant it in big clumps at the back of a herbaceous border and mix it with other structural giants such as grasses and delphiniums. They may be slow to put on new growth initially, but when established they can spread quite quickly.

  • Garden care: Lift and divide larger clumps in late autumn or spring. Smaller plants should simply be cut down to the ground in autumn or spring.
