A beautiful evergreen grass with brownish-green leaves turning shades of rich orange and red. Pheasant's tail grass makes an excellent, all-year accent plant for a sheltered, sunny border. Providing much-needed structure and colour in the winter garden, the faded flowerheads are best removed to prevent it from self-seeding.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, medium to light, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Flower colour: purplish-green maturing to pale gold
  • Other features: self-seeds freely
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (needs winter protection)

  • Garden care: Remove the faded flower-heads in autumn to prevent the plant from self-seeding. Comb through the plant in early spring to remove dead foliage
