Pheasant's Tail Grass (syn. Stipa arundinacea)
Anemanthele lessoniana
A beautiful evergreen grass with brownish-green leaves turning shades of rich orange and red. Pheasant's tail grass makes an excellent, all-year accent plant for a sheltered, sunny border. Providing much-needed structure and colour in the winter garden, the faded flowerheads are best removed to prevent it from self-seeding.
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: moderately fertile, medium to light, well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: fast-growing
- Flowering period: June to September
- Flower colour: purplish-green maturing to pale gold
- Other features: self-seeds freely
- Hardiness: frost hardy (needs winter protection)
- Garden care: Remove the faded flower-heads in autumn to prevent the plant from self-seeding. Comb through the plant in early spring to remove dead foliage
