Clematis 'Sweetheart' (PBR)

• Position: full sun or partial shade

  This herbaceous clematis will climb if it is allowed to clamber over existing, well established shrubs, or if it is tied onto a support as it grows, but its natural habit is a scrambler. From early summer it produces gorgeous mauve-pink flowers, each with a darker pink flush running through the centre of its petals. The flowers are large (up to 10cm across) and have a delightfully twist, which adds a great deal of interest. Compact enough to grow in a large pot on a sunny patio, it will also look sublime cascading over the edge of a wall.
  
  
• Garden care: In early spring cut back the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground-level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant, avoiding the immediate crown.
