Angelica
Angelica archangelica
- Position: full or partial shade
- Soil: deep, moist, fertile, loamy soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: June and July
- Hardiness: fully hardy
A stunning, architectural plant that adds height and drama to a border. It has pretty, deeply cut leaves and produces domes of tiny, luminous green flowerheads on tall stems in summer. This angelica is biennial and dies back after flowering, but will self-seed freely. It performs best in moist shade and it has a wide range of culinary and medicinal uses. Try it at the back of a herb garden, or among grasses and perennials, and give it space to express itself.
- Garden care: This plant usually dies after flowering, but if flowering is prevented, or the spent flowers are removed before they set seed, then it will often flower a second year.
