Nandina 'Plum Passion'
heavenly bamboo
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: moist but well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: July
- Hardiness: frost hardy (needs winter protection in cold areas)
A recently introduced cultivar that will provide year-round interst in the garden. The new foliage of this compact evergreen shrub emerges in spring a rich plum, providing great contrast with the older blue-green leaves. The colour fades as the bamboo-like foliage matures, but in autumn they turn firey shades of plum-red and copper. Further interest is provided in summer, when conical clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers appear, and these are followed by shiny, round, scarlet fruits. A hardworking, heavenly bamboo which is a valuable plant for a sunny spot where border space is limited. - Garden care: In mid or late spring lightly cut back any shoots that spoil the symmetry of the plant.
