Kniphofia 'Bressingham Comet'
red hot poker
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: August to September
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Stout stems rise from amongst the grass-like foliage in late summer, bearing clusters of slender red buds, which open from the base to tubular flowers that become paler as they mature. This creates a blaze of colour tat includes apricot-yellow, irridescent orange and fiery red on each of the flowerspikes. Popular with bees, the plants are happiest in full sun, with well-drained soil. - Garden care: In autumn remove and compost the faded, flower spikes and apply a deep, dry mulch around the crown of the plant. Cut back to the ground in spring to keep the foliage fresh-looking. Divide and re-plant overcrowded colonies in spring.
