  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: August and September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This has a more upright habit than most grasses, which makes it a good foil for soft, perennial plants. The leaves are powdery blue, and the flowerheads are made up of masses of tiny, red-purple spikelets, which give a shimmery, gauzy effect. In autumn, its vivid copper tones contrast well with the wheat and buff colours of other grasses and with the falling leaves of deciduous trees.

  • Garden care: Since it hails from Texas (hence its name), this cultivar will cope with drought and with light, sandy soils. Cut down to the ground in late winter and lift and divide congested colonies between mid-spring and summer.
