  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: any moist but well-drained, preferably acid to neutral soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The flowers of this deciduous grass stand, airy and transparent, high above the foliage. It’s therefore ideal for the middle of a border planted among large-flowered perennials, where the purple, feathery spikelets will catch every breeze. A native of moorland, it will flourish on most soils as long as they are not too dry. It will tolerate sun or light shade, and lasts well into winter.

  • Garden care: Cut back in late winter before the new foliage appears.
