  A decorative, perennial grass that will add colour and interest to mixed, naturalised or prairie-style planting schemes. In spring the slender new shoots appear and form first upright then arching clumps of dark to olive green leaves, which sometimes have a purple-red flush. From midsummer, large panicles of brownish-red flowers top upright stems above the foliage, which move softly in slightest breeze. Before dying back in autumn, the foliage colour intensifies and takes on rich red hues.
  
  
• Garden care: Protect from excessive winter wet. Cut down to the ground in late winter, before new foliage appears.
