  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
  • Flowering period: May to July
  • Flower colour: red
  • Other features: female plants may produce fleshy red fruits after flowering if there is a male plant nearby
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Bright scarlet, late spring and early summer flowers, may be followed by pendulous spikes of bead-like red fruits on this deciduous, twining climber. The slender crimson stems and dark green leaves, which sometimes have notched edges, are also attractive.

  • Garden care: Tie in young shoots to their support as they grow. In early spring, thin out over-crowded stems by cutting selected pieces back to their base, and cut back side-shoots to within 3 or 4 buds of the main stem.
