A traditional variety which produces large bunches of delicious red, table grapes in late summer and autumn. Grow it against a south- or south-west facing wall, or cover a pergola with it and let the pendulous clusters of fruit hang overhead. As it is already 1.5-2m tall it will give instant impact to your garden or patio. Though usually seen growing in the Mediterranean, grape vines can be grown successfully in most parts of the UK. All they need is a sheltered sunny spot against a warm wall and can either be grown in large pots or planted in well-drained soil.

  • Garden care: When planting incorporate plenty of well-rotted organic matter in to the planting hole. It will need some help to clamber up a tree so fix some plastic-coated netting to the trunk. If you are growing it along wires, cut back hard the young shoots in late summer and cut out older stems in early winter.
