A virtually evergreen, clump-forming perennial that produces balls of colbalt blue flowers in early summer. As the flowers fade so do the old leaves, but with new foliage developing in autumn. Great if naturalised in grass though it does need some winter protection.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May
  • Flower colour: blue
  • Other features: all parts of the plant may cause skin irritation and severe discomfort if ingested
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (needs winter protection)

  • Garden care: Plant bulbs 8cm (3in) deep in autumn in naturalistic drifts
