  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: gritty, poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: February and March
  • Flower colour: lilac with a yellow base
  • Other features: slender, strap-shaped, mid-green leaves
  • Hardiness: fully hardy
  • Bulb size: 5+

Initially the buds look like lilac-coloured flames on the upright stems, but then the flowers start to open more and more, gradually becoming almost flattened as they mature. The contrast between the lilac on the upper parts of the petals and the yellow base is striking, especially when the flowers open as they are usually viewed from above. A showy treat for the late winter and early spring garden

  • Garden care: Plant bulbs in naturalistic drifts 10cm (4in) deep in September or October.
