Plant these throughout the front of a sunny border or add them to your pots and windowboxes for a vibrant display in early spring. The finely dissected foliage is attractive in itself, but it is for the semi double, violet flowers, which have a decorative boss of near-black stamens that this plant is best-loved. They look great when planted with tulips.
- Garden care: Soak the tubers overnight in cool water and plant them in naturalistic drifts (it doesn't matter which way up) 5cm deep and 15cm apart from September to November. Ideally you should choose a spot where they can be left undisturbed so they can naturalise and spread. Avoid excessively wet conditions when dormant.
