  • Position: partial shade or full sun
  • Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This is a great shrubby tree that gets reasonably tall, but does not bush out too much. Therefore it is ideal for smaller spaces where you want to create height, but you don't want too much room taken up. The foliage is pretty too. It emerges in spring a fresh lime green, but soon turns a rich green shade. In autumn it changes again, this time turning brilliant orange-red before it falls.

  • Garden care: Add a top-dressing of a well-balanced fertiliser around the base of a newly planted tree in late spring and keep well watered. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
