Dig vacant ground

When the weather and soil conditions allow, dig over vacant ground that has not already been cultivated in the winter to prepare it for planting during mid-spring. Do not dig if the soil sticks to your tools or boots and on clay soil make sure you work off short planks to help spread your weight and so avoid damaging the soil structure. A garden spade is suitable on most soils, but if your soil is very stony a garden fork may prove easier to insert. When you dig, carefully remove all perennial weeds and their roots to prevent them being a nuisance later or spoiling the appearance of newly planted areas. You can also take the opportunity to improve the soil structure by incorporating well-rotted organic matter such as farmyard manure or garden compost, and if needed horticultural grit to open heavy soils.
