spencer sweet pea seed
Fill your garden with these sweetly-scented candy-pink blooms, which will appear continuously for several months from early summer if they are dead-headed regularly. They will thrive in a sunny spot, with reasonably fertile, well-drained soil, and should be planted where you can take full advantage of their perfume.
In this collection you will receive one packet of approximately 20 seeds of each of the following three varieties (approximately 60 seeds)
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Bobby's Girl':Each rich cream petal is heavily infused with salmon-pink, which becomes more noticeable towards the outer edges. This creates a very pretty, almost picotee effect, that looks equally at home beside soft pastels and more strident shades of pink and plum. The flowers are large, and they also have a deliciously sweet scent. Height to 1.8m
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Tara':Vibrant magenta pink flowers, that have a deliciously sweet scent, appear for several months from early summer. A favourite for the cottage garden, sweet peas are fast growing once they have had a chance to settle in, and look wonderful scrambling over a framework of brushwood stems. Alternatively plant them near a well-established shrub and let them tumble over that. Height to 1.8m
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Mrs Bernard Jones':Named after the renowned sweet pea breeders wife, this show-quality cultivar produces larger than average flowers on long stems, making them excellent for cutting. The colour of the petals is very pretty too, fading from near-cerise to a soft shell pink. An easy to mix, and all-round good performer, this sweet pea is definitely a star. Height to 1.8m
Garden care:From October to late February, sow seeds into deep pots or root trainers filled with a good-quality seed compost and place them in a cold frame. Pinch out the tips as the plants grow to encourage them to become bushier and produce more flowers, and harden off before planting out in early April. Direct sowings can also be made in October or March. Before planting out, incorporate lots of well-rotted organic matter in the planting hole. Apply a balanced liquid plant food every two weeks while in growth and deadhead regulary to encourage more flowers.
