Scented Spencer sweet pea collection

'Spencer' sweet peas produce larger than average, exhibition-quality flowers with frilly-edged petals, on long, slender stems throughout the summer. They are renowned for their deliciously strong scent and make excellent cut flowers.

This colour-coordinated collection contains some of our favourites, which when planted in a sunny spot, will make a truly lavish display. It contains six packets of seeds - one of each of the following cultivars.

sweet pea 'Leamington'
Sweetly scented, lavender blooms that make super cut flowers, appear throughout the summer on this gorgeous sweet pea. A favourite for the cottage garden, they will also thrive in pots, where they will quickly scramble up an obelisk or tepee of bamboo canes. Bees and other beneficial insects will flock to them in the garden and their heady perfume will keep them coming back for more.

sweet pea 'Charlies Angel'
Highly scented lavender-blue flowers add an alluring touch to cottage gardens or informal planting schemes, when they can be allowed to scramble over supporting obelisks, arches or trellis. Their soft colouring mixes well with stronger purples, blues and pinks.

sweet pea 'Daphne'
The clear lavender flowers of this luscious sweet pea are a generous size - just like the more modern varieties; but they have a strong scent, which is reminiscent of the old-fashioned types. This then has the best of both worlds, and we think it is a cracker. Mix it with richer purples and plum tones to great effect.

sweet pea 'Royal Wedding'
The fragrant, creamy white flowers are produced in open clusters on long stems throughout the summer and contrast well with the greyish-green foliage. An elegant sweet pea that has a delicious scent.

sweet pea 'Karen Louise'
A delightful sweet pea, which produces large sprays of pale lavender flowers on long stems throughout the summer. Ideal for exhibiting, the flowers also have a good, strong scent, so a vase filled with them will flood the room with perfume. Their soft colouring means they mix easily with other pastel shades as well as stronger pinks and purples.

sweet pea 'Pluto'
This lusciously coloured sweet pea will add bold splashes of colour to the border, where the bluish-purple flowers will look fab mixed with rich plums, lilacs and strong purples. The flowers appear throughout the summer if dead-headed regularly and have a delicate, sweet scent.

Garden care:From October to late February, sow seeds into deep pots or root trainers filled with a good-quality seed compost and place them in a cold frame. Pinch out the tips as the plants grow to encourage them to become bushier and produce more flowers, and harden off before planting out in early April. Direct sowings can also be made in October or March. Before planting out, incorporate lots of well-rotted organic matter in the planting hole. Apply a balanced liquid plant food every two weeks while in growth and deadhead regulary to encourage more flowers.
