The petals of these sumptuos sweet peas are richly coloured and have a plush, velvety appearance. Find a sunny spot with moderately rich, freely-draining soil for them - ideally near a path or entrance, so you can enjoy the scent each time you pass. The flowers will last well after being cut too, and will fill your home with their heavenly scent.
In this collection you will receive one packet of approximately 20 seeds of each of the following three varieties (approximately 60 seeds)
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Beaujolais':Flowers, which are so dark they almost look black, appear throughout the summer and gradually become a little paler, but still maintain a deep burgundy hue. The lower lip of the flower is a more distinct shade of purple, and these create a great contrast. Their bold colouring teams up well with lush purples and plums. Height to 1.8m
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Gwendoline':Creamy-white petals, which look like they have been dipped in pink icing sugar, form luscious sprays of flowers that appear in profusion in summer. This headily-scented variety looks great scrambling over an obelisk or sprawling over a hospitable, neighbouring shrub. Cut the flowers to fill your home with perfume, or leave them outside for the bees buzz about. Height to 1.8m
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Pluto':This lusciously coloured sweet pea will add bold splashes of colour to the border, where the bluish-purple flowers will look fab mixed with rich plums, lilacs and strong purples. The flowers appear throughout the summer if dead-headed regularly and have a delicate, sweet scent. Height to 1.8m
Garden care:From October to late February, sow seeds into deep pots or root trainers filled with a good-quality seed compost and place them in a cold frame. Pinch out the tips as the plants grow to encourage them to become bushier and produce more flowers, and harden off before planting out in early April. Direct sowings can also be made in October or March. Before planting out, incorporate lots of well-rotted organic matter in the planting hole. Apply a balanced liquid plant food every two weeks while in growth and deadhead regulary to encourage more flowers.
