ALL wooden products should be treated to preserve the wood. In extreme weather conditions like a hot summer, the surface of the furniture will rapidly loose moisture content this causes the surface of the timber to shrink and split - Treating with an oil such as Cuprinol hardwood furniture oil will reduce the chance of this happening. Its reapplication rate is determined by the weather conditions.
